"Shah Rukh generously helped me financially" - Shailja Gupta
I get overwhelmed every time I talk about it. Special thanks to Mr. Shah Rukh Khan. I had worked with him ten years ago and we kept in touch. Last year we met when he was in New York and he saw twenty minutes of the film and immediately offered to help me out. He asked me to come to India and then opened the doors to his production facility (Red Chillies Entertainment & VFX) I completed the film with the help of his team. He also generously helped me financially. Oscar winner Resul Pookuty helped me with the sound design and Vishal & Shekhar, Ram Sampath & Sagar Desai composed five songs. Shree Venkatesh Films (producers of films like Chokher Bali, Raincoat) stepped in and helped me release the film here.
Shah Rukh generously helped me financially |
Since my characters are from different parts of India and I wanted to use music to showcase the different flavours of the characters. There are 9 songs in the soundtrack; they are in Hindi, English, Marwari, Tamil and French. Fortunately it adds a lot of character to my movie and gives authenticity to my characters. I have a fast road trip number, a jazz piece, a ghazal, romantic songs as well as an authentic Indian wedding dance number.
One of the key takes from the movie is that all 8 characters are fleshed out and the women are not short changed- how did you develop these characters.
They are all based loosely on all my friends. So, when someone sees this movie, they will appreciate the similarities, and empathize, and laugh with them because they are real and deal with issues that my audience has gone through at some point in their life.
Why is the movie in English?
The choice of language was just natural. Since it's a story about Indians who live in New York, in our daily lives we all speak mostly English with a bit of our mother tongue thrown in between. I have tried to emulate the realistic way of communication in the movie. In fact the characters speak English, Hindi, Tamil and a little bit of friend.
What next
I have 2 stories penned down. One is a very dark film and the other is a romantic comedy which can either be made here as another Independent film or as a Bollywood film. But right now I am not thinking about it till Walkaway release. I have been working non stop for 2 years now so I will take a short holiday before I jump into my next project
I have got 2 scripts post Walkaway, one being very dark and the other a romantic comedy |
Opens on Friday in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle, Washington and Raleigh, N.C.

SRK makes history in China
And this occasion will go down in history because no Indian film has been released in China in the last 30 years. Intense preparations are on for the premiere, tentatively scheduled for November 30 in Beijing.
Producer Karan Johar says, "It's an honour especially since China allows only the release of 20 foreign films a year. I can't remember when was the last time an Indian film was released there.
We must have done something right this time, no?" Karan is already planning Shah Rukh's clothes for the Beijing premiere. Though he's tightlipped about it, we did get to know that it'll be a fusion of ethinic Indian wear with a typical Chinese style.
Vijay Singh CEO of Fox-Star, whose team has been thrown into a flurry of activities by this sudden Chinese invitation, says, "The Chinese authorities are really hard on foreign films. To be asked to release Khan is an amazing honour."
Considering the limited time available to Karan Johar and Fox-Star, it seems more likely that the film would be subtitled in Chinese. But that shouldn't be an impediment for SRK; after all, his name is Khan.

SRK escapes freak accident in Berlin
King Khan has a penchant for doing his own stunts whether for Ra.One or Don 2. But this time the actor messed up during a car sequence.
Recently the superstar successfully jumped off a high building for a sequence for the movie, but this time luck wasn't on his side. Reportedly the actor smashed his car in a camera while shooting a wild action sequence for Farhan Akhtar's Don 2.
A source told Deccan Chronicle, "It was a car chase sequence where SRK had to drive the car with Priyanka sitting next to him. It was the body double of the actress while SRK was driving. However, the car went out of control and rammed straight into the camera, destroying it completely. Thankfully, no one was injured and a big mishap was averted. But, the broken camera resulted in losses worth lakhs."
"A gracious SRK immediately came out of the car and apologised to everyone around including Farhan. He also volunteered to pay for all the damages incurred. Then he thanked everyone around and God that he was not injured. Farhan called for a break to let everyone's nerves settle down before resuming shooting," added the source.
Well SRK we hope your stunt spirit doesn't get dampened after this incident!

SRK a good-hearted don in ‘Don 2’
The industry is flying with rumors that Shahrukh's character in 'Don 2' is poles apart from the previous film. In 'Don 2 - The Chase Continues', the Bollywood Badshah is essaying the role of the head of an organized crime and drug-dealing family and will not be portrayed negatively.
Speaking of SRK's role in 'Don 2', the producers stated at the press conference on Friday that his character is not of a typical gangster.
Meanwhile, talking about his character in 'Don 2', SRK stated, "Don is very, very beautiful behind the dark, mean exterior and you just have to get to know him."
Incidentally, Farhan Akhtar's 'Don 2' does have elements of style and themes of a Bond film.
Farhan is inspired by Berlin's architecture
It's certainly going to be a tight schedule for the cast and crew of 'Don 2' in Berlin, as Farhan wanted to shoot the entire film for 45 days in the German capital.
Interestingly, at the press conference in Berlin, Farhan spoke that his inspiration to make the film in the German capital was because he is completely in awe with the architecture of the city.
"When I was here, I was very taken by the architecture of the city. It is a city that represented to me a new world," stated the director, who also revealed that his plan to make the film there happened three years ago.
King Khan awestruck with Berlin
It's not only Farhan who is mesmerized by the city, even SRK can't stop singing praises about the city.
The actor, who has a huge fan following in Germany, had openly stated at the press conference that he loves the city.
"I am just happy to be in Berlin. I love it. If you told me to stand up on a tourist bus and dance, I would do it," stated the Badshah of Bollywood.
"It is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever see... I have been here for two weeks and I don't feel I am working," further added the 'Don 2' star.

SRK’s accident on sets of Don 2
Like all heroes, Shah Rukh Khan too likes to do his own stunts. Especially when he is trying to outdo Rajinikanth. Apparently, Shah Rukh, who successfully managed to jump off a high rise, had an accident in Berlin, while shooting a wild action sequence for Farhan Akhtar's Don 2.
Our source from the sets said, "It was a car chase sequence where SRK had to drive the car with Priyanka sitting next to him. It was the body double of the actress while SRK was driving. However, the car went out of control and rammed straight into the camera, destroying it completely. Thankfully, no one was injured and a big mishap was averted. But, the broken camera resulted in losses worth lakhs. A gracious SRK immediately came out of the car and apologised to everyone around including Farhan. He also volunteered to pay for all the damages incurred. Then he thanked everyone around and God that he was not injured. Farhan called for a break to let everyone's nerves settle down before resuming shooting."
It is ironic that this accident should happen because SRK had posted pictures of himself jumping off the high rise a few days ago on Twitter. Shaayad kisiki nazar lag gayi, what say Shah Rukh?

The film features Khan in his old role as Don, the "unbeatable, unstoppable, smartest, smoothest gangster in the Asian drug world." Viewers are promised "an edge-of-the-seat thriller, with a riveting plot and breathtaking action."
"DON-2" is being shot for 50 days in prominent venues in the German capital, including the stadium that hosted the 1936 "Hitler Olympics" and the East Side Gallery, a long, graffiti-strewn section of the Berlin Wall.
Director Farhan Akhtar said he hoped to introduce a German audience to the Bollywood genre.

Khan said he was certain the Berlin authorities would get their wish.
"After the film is released, I fully believe that many Indians will come and deservedly so, because Berlin is so wonderful. You guys are going to a big problem getting all the Indians to go back. They will be everywhere."
"You don't know what you have let yourselves in for."
"DON-2" is the sequel to the 2006 "Don: The Chase Begins Again", itself a remake of the Bollywood classic "Don". It is due to premier in cinemas at the end of 2011.

Even Karan Johar, who is flying there for the screening, will contribute to the celebrations. The gang will then go to Berlin, where Gauri and Karan are planning to throw a party. Not many of the film fraternity would be there. So it'll be a comparatively quiet celebration with family, Karan, the cast and crew of Don 2," says a close friend of the actor's, who is speculating that there'll be a big bash with much fanfare when SRK returns to Mumbai.
Three cheers for the Khan who'll turn another year older soon, complete 20 years of marriage and sees his film MNIK release in all theatres across Italy - a first for any Hindi movie!

A Roman holiday for SRK and family
Shah Rukh Khan will be celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary October 25 without his wife. The actor will be working on that day. He is shooting with Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and Lara Dutta for Don 2 in Berlin, Germany. However, on his birthday November 2 King Khan will have the company of his loved ones.
Tanishaa |
Two days before his birthday, SRK will fly to Rome for a special screening of My Name Is Khan (MNIK) at the international film festival being held in the Italian capital. His wife Gauri and children Aryan and Suhana, as well as friend Karan Johar will join him there.
On a break
While Shah Rukh has
requested a three-day break from his producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar to visit Rome for the film festival and celebrate his birthday with his family, KJo is taking a short break from shooting his TV show Koffee With Karan 3 to be there. Later, the group will travel back to Berlin together where KJo and Gauri have planned a party with close friends (the cast and crew of Don 2).
Karan confirms, "We are excited that MNIK will be shown at the international film festival in Rome. Post-November, the film will be released in theatres across Italy for the first time. After the screening, all of us will fly down to Berlin to bring in Shah Rukh's birthday. While I will leave after that to spend Diwali with my mom in India, Gauri and the kids will stay back in Berlin to celebrate Diwali with Shah Rukh."
Karan Johar |
What gift has he planned for SRK? He laughs, "Haven't decided as yet. What can I give a man like Shah Rukh " barring unconditional love?" And of course the fact that MNIK is the Hindi film which has grossed the most internationally, till now. According to trade circles, MNIK has grossed over 22 million US dollars.
Karan adds, "When I was making it, I knew it was a global film which had a humanitarian message that would penetrate deep and wide and prick many people's conscience. I am gratified that it has achieved that."
SRK's fashion fundas
On men's clothing
'I really believe men don't have much choice. What's there apart from T-shirts, jeans, pants and shoes? Even as far as accessories are concerned, men should only wear a watch, and maybe a ring. Don't adorn yourself. I'm not too metrosexual about dressing up. I don't like the idea of thinking, 'What should I wear at that party tomorrow?'
On his fashion quotient
I'm not a very fashionable person. I believe that fashion isn't about looks, but about being able to look after yourself physically. I'm 45 now, but people tell me that I have the body of a 17-year-old. So if I look after myself, whatever I wear will look kind of nice on me.
Mostly, I don't choose what I wear. I let the designers choose, because they know what suits me better than I do. I don't even do trials. My favourite designer Naresh, who's been designing for me for 20 years now, says he's done only three trials of mine so far. And my designers have always given me the creative freedom to wear clothes the way I want to.
On his comfort clothing
I honestly believe that you can lead your whole life wearing a t-shirt and jeans — you don't need anything more than that. And a black suit with a white shirt. Yes, you should have variation in your wardrobe, but if it were up to me, I'd always choose a black suit with a white shirt! Even in my films, I make it a point to see that the clothes aren't too proper, because I don't choose my clothes at night before sleeping. I just pick something from my wardrobe half-an-hour before I leave home.'
On filmi fashion
For films, my take on style is, 'Don't take me out of the character'. Even when I'm shooting songs, the clothes have to be in sync with who the character is. He can't suddenly change into something else for a song! I tell my designers, 'Don't make me wear something fashionable. Make me wear something that will become fashionable after the film.'
SRK's Fashion Don'ts
I'm not much of a clothes person, despite being the Belmonte model. My designers know that I'm very careless with clothes. I hardly ever see the costumes before I reach the sets. I usually wear what they ask me to, but I still tell them to keep an alternate costume, just in case. For example, if I'm wearing a tuxedo, I'll tell them to keep an option for the shirt.
No drainpipes (skinny trousers or jeans): I have a motto — 'dead before drainpipes'. I'll never wear them.
Mismatched socks and shirts: I get disturbed if I don't have socks that match the colour of my shirt.
Ill-fitting jeans: I only wear one particular denim fit. I have 100 pairs of jeans in that precise fitting. So if someone tells me my character in the movie wears jeans of a different fit, I will not do that movie!
No boots: I personally don't like wearing boots — I prefer sneakers or shoes. But if the character requires boots, I don't mind.
No churidaars: In films, I never wear churidaars. Instead, I wear salwars. But again, if they tell me to wear it, as a last option, I will.
Shahrukh Khan being idolized in Break Ke Baad
Deepika Padukone who debuted with Shahrukh Khan in Om Shanti Om still gets into non-plus situation in the presence of King
Khan. She also replicates SRK in the movie. There is one situation where she gets drunk and in that state she claims to be Shahrukh Khan. Apart from her imitation she is playing the character of aspiring actress. And Imran Khan is portraying the character of theatre owner.
"Break Ke Baad" is directorial venture of Danish Aslam where Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone play childhood friends who fall into love but get estranged from each other later on. As the title suggests it is about post break up doldrums when both are separated by long distances but managed to revive what is left in their relationship. "Break Ke Baad" is a romantic comedy that is being shot in Delhi, Mumbai and Mauritius. It comes with an unconventional pairing of Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone.
