They’ve all run away: SRK

His Ra.One may be a massive VFX extravaganza but after the release of the superhero flick and the sequel to Don, Shah Rukh Khan wants to make a "small" romantic comedy.

Khan reveals that he's been meeting with newer directors to work out the logistics of the movie. "But no one wants to make a small film with me," he jokes. "I've had a chat with a lot of wonderful, new guys like Anurag Basu, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap and Vishal Bharadwaj and I've told them that I want to make a small, interesting and stylised purely romantic film on characters my age. I want to produce it under the Red Chillies banner, but no one's come up with a script yet."

Shahrukh KhanAfter seeing the success of recent small-budget Hindi films, Khan thinks that small is the new big, and is determined to make one too. "I'm already making a low-budget, sweet film about college and high school kids called Always Kabhi Kabhi, directed by Roshan Abbas, which should release in the next few months," he says.

The superstar admits that small films are commercially viable but insists that's not why he's made the movie. "It has the same idea as 3 Idiots, that parents expect certain things of their children, and there's a lot of pressure on the children when they start falling short of those expectations. It's a sweet film, and I hope youngsters like it."

Despite being a big budget movie star, Khan insists, "I have always believed in small, cosy films and from the beginning of my career, I've done many, be it Yes Boss or Chalte Chalte. I don't know what I'm doing after Don 2 wraps up in February, so I've approached a lot of directors, but they've all run away! They believe that if they make a film with Shah Rukh Khan, it should be a big film."

Though he's at the shoot of the youth fashion brand, Belmonte, of which he is the ambassador, Khan says that he wants to make films that appeal to every section of the audience.

"It's very important for me that absolutely everyone can watch my movies," he says. "I've always respected the tastes of the people. My mom used to tell me, 'Eat what you like to eat but wear clothes that people like to see.' Even with Belmonte, the range of clothes I endorse appeals to all consumers. So, it's fortunate that the brand mirrors what I wear in real life."

SRK’s the man, say producers

Shah Rukh Khan is set to become the first actor who is being considered to be in the core committee of the film industry's Producers' Association.

BT learned from reliable sources, that the producers will be suggesting that SRK be made part of a heavyweight, decision-making body that will look at keeping them unified and address issues that filmmakers across India face. The Bollywood Badshah's inclusion will be brought up when the producers meet soon to conduct their annual general meeting ( AGM).

"Shah Rukh's contribution in the last two decades is being kept in mind. He has been a successful actor and a producer. He is seen as a marketing wiz and the producers want him to give his inputs on taking the industry to the next level," says a top producer.

"He will be consulted for strategies on how to keep the producers united. The last time they put up a brave front against the multiplex owners over profit sharing and screen timings, some of them broke off the alliance and released their films thereby damaging the unity. The producers do not want a repeat of that and want someone like SRK who could guide them in moments of crisis," the highly placed informer says.
We have heard from sources that Aamir Khan was also being considered to be part of the body alongside SRK. However, since he is quite peeved with the competition commission dragging him to court on charges of forming a cartel during the filmmakers and multiplex owners' strike, Aamir is not too keen to have an authoritative post.

I’ll slap the person who talks rubbish about SRK and me: Karan Johar

/photo.cms?msid=6461536 Every artist in showbiz is kept under a microscope by his fans and the media as it is after all they who make an artist a celebrity by acknowledging his talent. It thus becomes imperative for the celebrity to silence their curiosity, no matter how personal or annoying it is!

Karan Johar's sexual preference and personal life is often a topic of interest. The filmmaker even gets posts addressed to him on his microblogging site asking the same! Rumours of his alleged 'close' relationship with SRK too keep floating around in social circles and media.

Though KJO or SRK do not pay heed to the unflattering things said about their friendship, or at times make fun of the news themselves KJO couldn't help but retort to the journalist who dared to ask him a question on it.

"Shah Rukh is like my elder brother. He is seven years older than me. I respect him the way I respect my parents. I am closer to his wife Gauri. I have worked with Shah Rukh the most as a filmmaker. If it wasn't for him and Aditya Chopra, I wouldn't be what I am today. So those who think of my friendship with SRK as something else are just sick! I'd slap such people if they come in front of me" said Karan to a journalist in a TV interview.

My children are my harshest critics, says Shahrukh Khan

London, Aug 29 (PTI) Describing his children as his harshest critics, Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan says he has become a better film actor thanks to them.

Writing in the magazine of The Mail on Sunday on "The Secrets of my success", Khan wrote, "Now I have kids, I enjoy them more than acting, but it''s certain I''ve become a better film actor thanks to them as well.

"They''re my harshest critics. They''re honest and say things like, ''That''s no good; you can do better.'' If you appeal to their honesty, I think you can be a very good actor," he added.

With 70 films to his name, hundreds of millions of fans and 13 Filmfare awards, Bollywood''s equivalent of Oscars, seven of his being for Best Actor, Khan can lay claim to the title of world''s biggest film star, the report said.
As well as being a successful actor, producer and TV presenter, he has fronted the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, and owns the Kolkata Knight Riders, an IPL cricket team.
Khan, 44, wrote he never thought he would be an actor.
"I wanted to be a footballer, but I got injured, and because I had nothing to do in the evenings I started work on a play.
Suddenly my life''s timetable changed, and I began doing theatre; then television came to India, so I did a TV series that did very well. After doing a degree in economics, I went to film school, then went to Mumbai for a year. Just for a laugh and a change of scene, I moved into acting in films."
In his inimical style, Khan added, "When I was young I was even more stupid than I am now. I was very self-absorbed and I really thought I was fantastic - I went as far as writing a song called I''m The Best. It sounds pompous to think of it now, but at that point I really thought I couldn''t fail.
I''d lost my parents, I didn''t have a home, I couldn''t go any lower. So I tackled the world head-on. When you have nothing to lose it means there''s everything to win.

Noting that there''s no secret formula to success, the ace actor wrote, "Life is not about putting everything into place and planning the last detail. No doubt it''ll work fine for you, but it won''t bring magical success."

Focusing on the value of one''s education, Khan added, "I never had a house when I started off, but because I was educated I was able to do a lot. It''s nice to have a rags-to-riches story if you become successful. If your story isn''t that, then nobody likes it. But I''m proud that I now have a house that I''ve provided for my children. I know it sounds a small thing but it means a lot to me." PTI HSR

The son must seep into his father's imagination, revive the hero and battle the demon.

I am keen to watch Dabangg: SRK

Wherever there is SRK, witty one-liners and sharp sarcasm is expected but so is the good 2-3 hours of delay! Shah Rukh kept the media waiting for long before he made his smashing appearance in beige coat, blue jeans and white shirt as he and wife Gauri were declared the brand ambassadors of furnishing brand D'Decor. However, once the actor took the stage, the agonizing wait was worth it as he didn't leave a single stone unturned to satiate scribes as he answered questions ranging from his wife, bank balance, Salman Khan and even commonwealth games with immense patience. SRK apologized to the media and then joked, "I am not a small star to come on time bhai."
Gauri Khan we hear was not keen on attending the press conference but it was SRK who convinced his wife to face the media. Gauri however barely spoke! Hubby dearest did all the talking and confessed that though he is protective of his family, D'Decor was a brand which symbolized the togetherness of a family so it was fine if Gauri chose to do it. Gauri also declared that the ad is not a stepping stone into films. 'I am too old to become an actress" said she.

The couple shied away from speaking about each other and chose not to disclose the negative qualities in each other by claiming they have none! "I am perfect" said both to which Shah Rukh added cheekily, "See, my entire family is like that."
"Gauri is a good homemaker and not just a house maker. I don't know much about furnishing or interiors. I love my daughter's pink bedroom in the house while Gauri loves the study," said SRK.
Having lost a considerable amount of weight, SRK revealed it was his Ra.One superhero outfit that forced him to lose weight. "Don't I look sexy though" he asked.
Salman Khan had to be in conversation but SRK surprisingly didn't take any offence to questions pertaining to Salman "I am keen to watch Dabangg. I am told the film is looking interesting" said SRK when asked if he would watch Salman's film.
The actor also took this opportunity to clear rumours of him charging 10 Cr for performing in Commonwealth games. "I have not been approached. Also as it is I won't be in India in October' said he.
Shah Rukh Khan once again delivered a furnished performance at the press con that left everyone with a smile...

A Minute With: Shah Rukh Khan gets up close and personal

MUMBAI (Reuters) – One of India's most popular superstars, Shah Rukh Khan, is known for guarding his personal life fiercely from the media glare.

But for a change he has allowed a bit of the spotlight into his home, appearing in an ad campaign for a furnishing brand with wife Gauri, their first endorsement together.

Khan, 44, spoke to Reuters about doing an ad with his wife and pushing the boundaries as a producer in Bollywood.

Q: You have said you don't mix your professional and personal life. So were there apprehensions about doing an ad film with your wife, Gauri?

A: I am apprehensive. When you get into the public field you do open yourself to a lot of positives and negatives. For someone who is not planning to get into the field, maybe it is not the right thing to do.

Gauri doesn't want to do this full-time. She's done it as a one-off, and she's happy with it. So, yes, I am apprehensive.

If my kid decides to be an actor, I will be very clear that you are walking into something that has positives as well as negatives, so you have to open yourself to that, you have to be tough.

Q: Your next home production "Ra One" is India's first sci-fi superhero film. Do you aim to push boundaries with every film?

A: When I am producing a film, we like to take a few chances; we can afford to, because our films have a big market and a big price.

I have always been of the belief that if you get a great price for your product, it's not just for the product, but the brand that you have created, so you should utilize

it.

The way "My Name is Khan" was a step ahead in terms of storytelling, breaking the mold from what Karan and I had done, and saying something that people say in a much smaller film, and still we got a lot of acclaim.

We told ourselves, why should we be scared, just because we are taking a different subject, or what if it goes wrong. Mashallah, it did not go wrong. Similarly, with "Ra One," with the technology that was involved in it, is something that is yet untried. And not tried, because you don't get the money for it in the Indian market. I could, so I said I should.

I may lose some money on it, but that's ok. But if I am able to turn the tables around and say that India has a technological step-up with this film -- maybe 2 per cent, I am not saying I want to change the world I think I will return some of what this industry has given to me over the years.

Q: Do you think 3D, the technology that you are talking about is the way forward for Bollywood?

A: See, in film-making, whatever the knowns are, if you can control them and expand them, that's fantastic. Because storytelling is an unknown. That will never be controllable. So you can make a great film technically or you may make a very bad film technically, but the story has to be good.

I believe as a producer you should be willing to push the envelope as far as the knowns are concerned whether it is better camerawork, better lensing, better production values, or better technology. You can innovate through these things, so that something is different. You have to say, I am going to take this story and pack it this way. Like I saw this film the other day, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and it's so wonderfully crafted.

Q: As a businessman, what is the one golden rule you live by?

A: The simple thing is, your cost should not exceed what you can afford to get from the market. You should not sacrifice quality for profit.

If need be, if you can afford it, handle a bit of loss, but quality will speak. I can't say content, because like I said, that is unknown, but quality will set you apart, whether it is in life, in business or play. The quality you give to your life or your product will always make you special.

Stardom comes because of this. See the greatest of brands and you will know this about them. I try to stick by that.

Twice visited Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan Berlinale, now here he turns even a movie: The sequel to the thriller " Don "- and still looking for extras.

Also at the Berlinale in 2008 Khan was present at the time with " Om Shanti Om ", and even then he had the possibilities of a German -Indian cooperation explored in general and with regard to "Don 2 ". Even Britain, he had then taken as another location in the eye. Apparently he has now found: not in Frankfurt , where the director and his production partner Ritesh Sidhwani have been, but in Berlin.

It should here like that going on like years ago during the filming with Matt Damon for "The Bourne Supremacy " , but just in Indian. It is the third time that Khan's film character to the screen occurs: an Indian blend of Fantomas and Dr. Mabuse , Khan so this time not as a positive hero , but as the law is always tricky elusive Super Gangster. First, the figure appeared in 1978 in the Indian Thriller " Don ", directed by Chandra Barot, the title role played Amitabh Bachchan. Farhan Akhtar's version of 2006 , this time with Shah Rukh Khan in double role of Don and his double Vijay, then, was a remake , which now finds its first sequel. If it is successful again , is to follow one another .

But first must take drastic enough to the stars next to Shah Rukh Khan extras. The search is also a bit player for the continuation of the movie success, " men's hearts "and two movies playing in Moscow , a total force of more than 2500 men and women from Berlin and Brandenburg, as it says in the statement of the agency film faces. The agency was looking for extras yesterday for the continuation of the thriller " Don "with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan , for the continuation of the German comedy " Men's hearts, " and two movies playing in Moscow . "All great , "says Denise. You do not care what movie they should play in - unlike many other candidates who classify themselves in the now 100 -meter-long queue. Most seem to come for the Indian. "I am quite clear because , Don ' there, " says Andi about the end of 30 and Khan fan. " To play with the best actors in the world - that would be something, " he enthuses . The 55 € per day of shooting interest him less. Andi was because of Shah Rukh Khan twice on the red carpet of the Berlinale. His hope now , " just to be near him again. 'I am very protective about my family'

Shah Rukh Khan was in full form on Thursday as he cracked jokes with the media during a press conference to announce his wife, Gauri, as the brand ambassador of a furnishing brand, D'decor.

The actor, who seems to have lost a lot of weight after returning home from a 70 day hectic schedule of Ra.One in London, shot for the ad with his wife. He even tweeted about how nervous he was about shooting with her: 'Preparing for a "big shoot" 2maro. No it's not ra.one with ten cameras. it is with Gauri for D decor brand furnishings. very nervous (sic),' he tweeted a day earlier.

But there was no sign of nervousness at the launch where Rajul Hegde got to fire some quick questions at the star and his wife. Excerpts:

How did you convince Gauri to do the commercial?

The decision was entirely hers. That is what trust and love is all about. Gauri did not feature in this ad for money. She has interest in furnishing. The owners of the brand are family friends, so she was comfortable. I am very protective about my family and would not let them work in an uncomfortable environment.

Do you give any inputs to Gauri in decorating the house?

I can tell whether it looks good or bad but I cannot make any decision.

Which is your favourite corner in your house?

My children's bedrooms. Whenever I have time, I am either in my daughter's pink bedroom or son's blue bedroom. Both of us end up spending more time in our children's bedrooms. I like spending time in the library as well, to do all my creative work.

Farah and I are friends: SRK

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has cleared the air over a reported rift with choreographer-director Farah Khan, saying that just because he wasn't on her next project didn't mean that they weren't friends.

He wished her luck for her next film "Tees Maar Khan", for which she signed on Akshay Kumar instead of Shah Rukh.

"My friendship with all is as it was before, love them the same way. Many times if we are not working with each other doesn't mean that I hate her or end of friendship. I don't take my wife's decision, how could I take others. I want to see everyone doing well.

"When I am shooting with someone, I am more in touch with him. This time I am not in touch with Farah but wish her all the success and hope this film ('Tees Maar Khan') becomes a bigger hit than 'Om Shanti Om', which was her last film. I just hope she become even a bigger producer. Yes, she is a friend of mine. I am not doing a film with her, which doesn't mean I don't love her," said Shah Rukh.

Shah Rukh played the lead role in Farah's last film "Om Shanti Om".

Celebrating TV in front of SRK’s home

In a unique initiative which can be seen very flattering as well as a nuisance for Shah Rukh Khan, an upcoming film Khichdi will be holding a promotional event outside Mannat, the residence of the superstar. Mannat has a small park opposite its gates and the organisers have been able to get permission to hold the event there. where the first poster of the film will be unveiled.

The significance of doing the event in an open area outside SRK's residence is to mark the phenomenal success the actor has achieved on the big screen after starting out as a TV actor. Khichdi is India's first TV series that is being made into a film. The popular comic characters of the series will stage this event to underline the fact that TV stars can be successful on the big screen too.

The organisers have not taken SRK's permission for this event. Along side the posters of Khichdi, they will also display the poster of Deewana, Shah Rukh's first film.

"Its symbolic. What the Taj Mahal is to Indians, Shah Rukh's house is the same for anyone moving from television to films. He is inspirational," says Aatish Kapadia, writer, director of Khichdi.

I am too old for Bollywood: Gauri Khan

Gauri Khan, wife of superstar Shah Rukh Khan said she is too old to try her luck in Bollywood.

The star-wife, who features in a TV commercial for the first time, as the brand ambassador of a furnishing brand with Shah Rukh, was speaking to the media here today.

To a question if she would want to try out acting in a film after working in a television ad, Gauri said, "I am too old to be in films. If I was younger, may be I would have considered."

Incidentally, she is the producer of SRK's movies like Om Shanti Om, Main Hoon Na, Billu and the upcoming Ra.one.

When asked if she would have featured in the ad with any other actor, Gauri said she was in the project because of her husband.

"It was a home concept and it would be awkward for me to feature in it with any other man," she said.

Shah Rukh, who was present at the press conference was the doting, protective husband as Gauri faced a barrage of questions.

On being asked how was the experience of facing the arch lights for the first time, Gauri said she had never worked so much in her life. "I am so tired that I have been sleeping for two days," she said. The television commercial with Shah Rukh was shot on Sunday.

The superstar who has just returned home after a 70 day hectic schedule of <I>Ra.one</I> in London jokingly asked his wife if she wished to act in a movie. "Please tell me, I will produce it myself," he said.

Later on a serious note, SRK said that in their relationship as husband and wife, both have freedom of choice.

"The decision was entirely hers. That is what trust and love is all about. Gauri did not feature in this ad for money. She has interest in furnishing and the owners of the brand are family friends so she was comfortable. I am very protective about my family and would not let them work in an uncomfortable environment," he said.

Speaking about his wife, SRK said Gauri was just like another ordinary homemaker.

"I like that she senses when I am sad and supports me. Similarly, when I am happy, she celebrates secretly," he said.

On being asked if Shah Rukh was a good father or a good husband, Gauri said, "I can't answer this question because I cannot keep praising him all the time."

Shah Rukh said Gauri makes his home beautiful. "My work is separate from my personal life. I don't carry my image and stardom home. We are a real family and my wife and kids are not overawed by my work. The way we lead our lives is the same how we used to do in Delhi," he added.

He said the only irregular feature in their normal life was the fact that he is seen on the big and small screen.

"But my children understand that this is my job. They are honest with me and discuss with me what is good or bad about my movies," he said fondly.

Ajay Arora, MD of D'Decor, the furnishing brand, said Gauri and her family make the home beautiful in the true sense.

Shah Rukh Khan Tops 6 Lakh Followers On Twitter

Shah Rukh Khan celebrated crossing six lakh followers on the micro-blogging website, Twitter.com, by calling for "ideas for better films", from his fans. Asking his fans for the one thing they would "want to see different in Indian films" Shah Rukh conducted a snap poll and concluded that "songs & dances should lessen or become more realistic".

The actor, who made his mark playing grey shades in Darr: A Violent Love Story and Baazigar, said thrillers "seemed (like) an idea" and so did stories that were more involved with reality. Shah Rukh accepted that "our screenplays are a bit hackneyed" and added that, "maybe time for screenplay schools…or courses."

Last but not the least, the Bollywood actor, who is now playing a superhero in his next film, RA.ONE, accepted that he had a thing for biopics.  "I am also one for biopics…not only of very famous people…but of lesser known people who have interesting stories to share," wrote Shah Rukh. The actor has already played the Indian emperor Asoka in the 2001 film by that name.

Have a story idea in mind? SRK's listening!

Badshah Khan is tired of those fully faltu Bollywood stories.

Tweeting from the sets of his latest film in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Shah Rukh Khan asked fans to send in suggestions of what they would like to see in the movies.

'I think our screenplays are a bit hackneyed. maybe time for screenplay schools...or courses,' he tweeted.

What do you think? Is is time for Bollywood to change track and make different kinds of movies?

Or do you think Bollywood wouldn't be Bollywood without the song and dance, the drama and the kitsch?

Which Khan will play the baddie

Speculation is rising as to who will play the bad man in Yash Raj Films' Dhoom 3. which is a sequel to Dhoom 2. Names of all the top Khans right from Shah Rukh Khan to Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan are being bandied about. While the first sequel had John in the neagative role, the second part had Hrithik playing the elusive thief.

Abhishek Bachchan will undoubtedly play the lead with Uday Chopra as they have been constants in the previous films. The female lead will be decided only after the baddie has been signed on.

Sources inform that since director Sanjay Gadhvi's Seven Days In Paris has been put on the back burner, he is back with Yash Raj Films. Producer Aditya Chopra is busy working on the script of Dhoom 3.

Since Shah Rukh has always been the favourite of the Yash Raj banner, it is likely that he will play the bad man in the film. It will be good to see Shah Rukh play the baddie after a long time. The official announcement is awaited.

‘Don 2’ to be shot in Berlin

In a development, which has elated Berlin tourism officials, a film starring Shah Rukh Khan is to be shot on location in the German capital this autumn, officials said on Tuesday.

"This could be the breakthrough needed for making the Berlin destination known to the Indian market," Berlin tourism director Burkard Kieker said on Tuesday. "It's exactly what we want." "Don 2" — a sequel to the blockbuster "Don" — is being supported by the Berlin-Brandenburg film promotion company Medienboard to the tune of 550,000 euros (705,000 dollars).

Farhan Akhtar will direct the flick, with the shoot scheduled to last 50 days and taking place in many landmark Berlin sites.

Khan stirred up a bit of Bollywood fever in Berlin last winter when his film "My Name Is Khan" was featured at the Berlinale Film Festival.

"The Indian superstar and the film location Berlin will make for a great couple before the largest audience in the world," said Medienboard managing director Kirsten Niehuus.

Shahrukh Khan: The Made in India Star!

If there is any one who is truly made in India, then it has to be superstar of B-Town, Shahrukh Khan!

The popular number, which stormed into top chart buster slots, by Alisha Chinnai, 'Made in India', truly is applicable to our very own Shahrukh Khan!

Recently, when Shahrukh Khan was in Hyderabad to shoot for a scene for his home production flick 'RA.ONE', he got quite nostalgic, and twittered about it on his page.

Shahrukh's message went like-" Flew into Ramoji Rao in Hyderabad…..last I shot here was Baadshah, some 12 years ago…..time flies……and how nice to be here".

SRK, further added his association with the city of Hyderabad, and he posted "I am half Hyderabadi (mom), half Pathan (Dad), some Kashmiri (grandmom), have a Punjabi wife and own a Kolkata (India Premier league) team. Indian at heart.

Now, just to make this very authentic statement more convincing, may we add another line from Alisha's song- 'Dil Chahiye bus Made in India?'

Of course, Shahrukh has more often than not proved to be a proud Indian by heart, but then with his family lineage belonging to almost all parts of the country, this is one star, who truly rules the hearts of millions of Indians, everywhere in the world!

Thus, we sure have a 'Made in India Star' in this super star called Shahrukh Khan!

D Decor: Shahrukh Khan with wife Gauri Khan in front of the cameras

Shah Rukh Khan or Shahrukh Khan, the famous Bollywood star, which cameras, the press and crowds is quite accustomed, seems the upcoming nervous filming with his pleasant wife Gauri Khan to be largely unknown.

The Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan and wife Gauri Khan will soon be standing together in front of the cameras, because both were hired by a furniture store for an ad with the name of the furniture store "D Decor is" and therefore is not an IKEA-like segment, but with exclusive interior design .. suitable for Shahrukh Khan's taste.

Where "D Decor" the three largest furniture brands around the world, even if the company in Germany, of course, we know little if at all. Might be read by Shah Rukh Khan, to give him that even the most creative and quite exclusive furniture from the "D Decor" and he, like Shahrukh Khan said, quite "nervous" given the upcoming filming of the commercials for "D Decor" with his wife Gauri Khan would be.

After the new superhero movie "Ra.One" by and with Shahrukh Khan was filmed in London and the famous Bollywood actor in the last week in addition to a publicity still turning a nice picture with his children in "Henna-Style" was published, Shahrukh Khan also able to get the new movie of Deepika Padukone look.

It seemed the performance of the Star Deepika Padukone Shah Rukh Khan to promise well, for that praised his colleague via Twitter, with Shahrukh Khan along the way also Neil Nitin, the co-star Deepika Padukone in the film of "Lafangey Parindey mentioned" praise.

When the shooting of Shahrukh Khan with wife Gauri Khan for "D Décor" is present is unclear, but one can assume that one will find after the publication of the advertisement with Shahrukh Khan certainly the video on YouTube and Co.. Nervous need someone like Shah Rukh Khan certainly not be, even if it did, as so often makes quite sympathetic.

SRK claims technology in Ra.One a first

Since its announcement, Ra.One has constantly been in the news. And Shah Rukh Khan's regular tweets are only increasing people's curiosity.

Back from an extensive European schedule, the actor enthuses that he's bringing new technology to Indian cinema. "I can vouch for the fact that it's never been used in Indian cinema before," Khan asserts, adding, "Whether it's the action or the visual effects, cinematography or the background work, musically and visually, it's the first time you'll see something like this in our cinema."

In the same vein, the actor-producer hopes it opens doors for Indian filmmakers to start using technology as an aspect of filmmaking. "I think there's a danger we will lose Indian audiences for Indian films very soon. The western inflow, westernisation of culture is already happening. There are genres of films, which if we don't venture into, our young audience will start looking for them in foreign films. Gradually, as in Italy, China, Japan and Korea, people here won't watch local films, unless we spruce up our technology. That's my main objective as a producer," he elaborates.

Sportsman son
Since children are superhero fans, one wonders if Khan's son Aryan didn't wish to be a part of the film. Besides, he's also faced the camera for Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. "This way, I'll have the whole family in my movies," he jokes, but is quick to add that Aryan is too young to work in films. "It's his choice. But I think he should be a sportsman. We need more sportsmen in our country than actors," he asserts.

Khan is currently endorsing D'Décor, a furnishing brand, with wife Gauri. "Honestly, I'm not a lifestyle kinda guy. So when some lifestyle product or magazine is brought to me, I find it odd as I don't really understand it," he confesses, adding that having done Lux, there's very little left to distinguish between a men's brand and a women's brand. "But Ajay (Ajay Arora) is a friend. And it's a big turn on for me that an Indian company has made a place for itself internationally," he says.

Tell him that the brand custodians were keener to sign him with Gauri, as against him solo and Khan jests that it made him feel "like Abhimaan. If my wife is not there, then they won't give me the job," he smiles.

He adds that since furnishing is a creative department, it's important that a woman handles it. "They were clear that furnishing is the hero of the ad and Gauri, the heroine. I'm the supporting actor," he laughs. "That's what I'm mostly used for, to bring in the crowd and get the eyeballs, while they sell the story. It's more relevant to have Gauri in the campaign. An actual couple makes a stronger impact," he signs off.

SRK: Reading on underworld

Talking of Aamir Khan, my birdy from Bandra wants to give me some dope on Shah Rukh Khan. I’m informed that during the shooting of his superhero fantasy flick, Ra.One, the actor-producer seemed to have been bitten by the underworld bug. Now now, don’t leap to conclusions my dahlings. I’m
informed that when he wasn’t preoccupied with his movie, SRK would be busy reading Aabid Surti’s novel, Sufi. Well, that’s not surprising since the actor is known to be keen reader and has a wide variety of books in his library.

But, a book on the Mumbai underworld during the 1970s is not something one would readily associate with SRK’s taste in reading. Wonder if a dekko of Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai is next. Or shouldn’t I ask?

Lara all set to impress Shahrukh Khan

Lara Dutta seems to be all set to impress King Khan, after all who doesn't want to be in good books of Shahrukh. Actually, the actress is the new entrant in the sequel of Farhan Akhtars' Don which has SRK and Priyanka Chopra in the lead role. So, the gorgeous actress is leaving no stone unturned to match up with the style which the movie demands off. She is nowadays experimenting with her looks with Farhan who will eventually take the final call.

"Look-test went well. I tried out four different options. Will now, decide on the final look with Farhan. Was pretty happy though," exclaims Lara on the micro-blogging site. It may be recalled here; Lara recently had attended workshops for the same movie and now is so particular about her looks.

Along with Lara, Kunal Kapoor has also been roped for a charcater which was earlier to be played by Arjun Rampal. However, due to creative diffrences, Arjun backed out and Kunal came in the picture.

Shah Rukh Khan chosen as brand ambassador for Nerolac Paints?

There are film stars, mega stars, superstars and then, there's the unanimous star of them all: Shah Rukh Khan!

Sources close to Bollywood Hungama have informed that the King Khan has now been chosen to be the brand ambassador of Nerolac Paints. Our source also added that the reason to choose SRK as the ambassador was because of his global appeal! Even though the finer details of the deal are still being worked upon, there are strong rumors that SRK had flown to Kolkata late last week to sign on the dotted lines.

What can we say besides, long live King Khan... and his never-ending list of brand endorsements.

The Shahrukhis of Vienna: Full transcript

New Delhi:  Meet Shahrukhis, the German speaking fans of King Khan. They talk about Shahrukh, collect his memorabilia, watch his films together, dance to his film songs and plan their next visit to meet Shahrukh. Many of them have even visited India for his birthday.

Here's the full transcript of the NDTV documentary on the Shahrukhis of Vienna:

26-year-old Marlene is the first Shahrukhi we meet in Vienna, Austria. Shahrukhi is a term coined by German speaking fans of Shahrukh Khan to describe themselves.

Marlene works as an office assistant and she is taking us home to her one bedroom apartment uptown.

Marlene's private world is minimalistic, except for one ornamentation - Shahrukh Khan.

She has a collection of coffee mugs, posters, Indian movie magazines, DVDs, biscuit packets, almost any item emblazoned with Shahrukh Khan's face.

Facing Marlene's bed is a giant cutout of Om Shanti Om.

Marlene Zachs a resident of Vienna says about the giant cutout: I bought it from an E Bay auction. I first saw it at the Berlinalle function in 2008. Shahrukh signed it for all the people in Berlin. It was for a good deed.

NDTV: How much did you pay for it?

Marlene: In Euros, I would say about 300 Euros.

NDTV: And you thought it was money well spent?

Marlene: Of course, of course. For Shahrukh I can give everything.

NDTV: What can you do for Shahrukh?

Marlene: Shahrukh means a lot to me, I want to do everything for him. He is such a good human being. I like him so much.

When I saw him, I was sort of crazy. He is so fantastic. I wanted to meet this man. I wanted to see him. When I first saw him at the Berlin airport, I didn't know he would be there at that time. I just touched him one time to see if this man could be real.

NDTV: Do you like other stars of the Hindi film industry?

Marlene: Yes I like Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi. There are so many I like.

NDTV: Then what makes Shahrukh so different? What do you think is the best thing about Shahrukh?

Marlene: He is a great human being. He is not only a brilliant actor, he is always there for his family, his wife and kids. He takes out so much time for his fans and his friends. He is always so nice...that's why he is called King Khan.

Marlene: This is a picture of Shahrukh and me. It was at the C Carnival 2009. I met him a few times. He was there for three days and I met him every day and got many autographs from him. It was really really nice.

The C Carnival was happening in London.

Marlene: I have spoken to him many times at the C Carnival. It was on the stage that the fans got a chance to meet him personally for a few moments and I was also on the stage. I talked a little with him and he signed a few pictures for me.

NDTV: Did he ask about you?

Marlene: Yes, yes, he is very interested in people. Maybe that's the reason I like him so much. He is so friendly and interested in other people.

Marlene has not only been to Berlin and London to meet her screen idol, she has also flown to India.

Marlene: I've been to India only once. I remember it was in November 2009. I was there for his birthday. It was 2nd November and I was there to greet him outside Mannat. It was beautiful.

Marlene was accompanied by other Shahrukhis from Vienna.

Marlene: I have ten friends who also love Shahrukh like me. We were all together in India.

NDTV: Are these people together with you since school?

Marlene: No, no...I found them because of Shahrukh. It was at a forum that we got to know each other. We started meeting each other and now we are good friends because of Shahrukh.

Marlene: We meet sometimes at the shop, sometimes at home, either they come to me or I go to them. Sometimes, we just meet in a café.

NDTV: What are the things you like to do together?

Marlene: Talking about Shahrukh! We always talk about Shahrukh, watch movies together, plan our next trips to see Shahrukh.

Bollywood Gandhi Video Store has played a pivotal role in bringing Sharukhis together in Vienna.

The store is owned by 40 year old Satish Gandhi, an immigrant from Haryana who has worked his way up - from being a newspaper vendor to a businessman.

When we visit the store we meet 51 year old Maria. She is Hungarian and works in a bank.

Maria Grofne: It is very difficult to put it into words why he is so special and unique. I think that on the one side, if you meet him personally, he is a normal guy, honest like you and me. But his presence is a magic. If you watch his films, it is not only his great performances, but also you get to love him as a person. I can actually say that the whole family is a Shahrukh fan. Shahrukh is kind of a family member.

Maria says she watches a Sharukh movie every day.

Maria Grofne: I watch about half an hour, not the whole film as I do not have the time. I watch them in Hindi. It's also very important that I hear his voice.

Maria Grofne: We went to Mumbai last year for his birthday. We wanted to be there once, once in a lifetime at least. And it was a great experience.

Orsolya Kosa: I think he is a very good actor. He has played many, many different roles and he had to express so many different emotions. I think he is a good happy person. He touches people's hearts. He is also very simple and modest.

Shahrukh's Austrian fans discovered him in November 2004 when 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' was telecast by a private German channel. It was the first Indian film to be shown and it was dubbed in German.

Fascinated by the Indian actor, viewers searched the internet, to learn about his movies, about him and his family.

The store became popular as Shahrukh Khan DVDs were readily available here.

Satish Gandhi, owner, Bollywood Gandhi Store: Ninety per cent of our customers are Austrians, Yugoslavs, Turkish, Arabs, Iranis, Afghanis. Indians are just 10 per cent.

The fans belong to different age groups and to different sections of society.

Christina Wininger: My husband is from Syria and from childhood he is a Bollywood fan. He loves Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor and all of them. I am from Austria.

Christina Wininger: I think he gives all his heart when he is acting - his energy - he is so alive. Also when you see a film which is not so good, but with Shahrukh it becomes amazing. He gives life to the film. His personality becomes like the character he plays in the film. When I see a film of Amitabh Bachchan - he is Amitabh Bachchan, but Shahrukh is Raj, Rahul, Surinder...he is that person.

Christina Wininger: My favourite film is 'Main Hoon Na'. It was the first film I saw. And this movie is so great because it has everything - comedy, tragedy, love story, action, also politics - it is also about how you should like one another and that there should not be hate between the countries.

Michaela Wininger, Christina's sister in law: I like his acting very much, because the people who see him in the film feel emotional. He plays his roles whole-heartedly. He gets into the roles he plays.

Sarah Sannoufeh, Christina's daughter in law: He looks good, he is a very good actor. I like him, I love him.

The Shahrukh cult is bringing in a multicultural influence into a society that is viewed by some as becoming increasingly xenophobic. Two years ago, nearly 30 per cent of Austrians voted for two far right parties that encouraged so called genuine Austrians to believe they were victims of foreigners or immigrants who take away their money and undermine their culture.

Christina Wininger: I like it that people have started to love Bollywood. It's difficult to explain because the Europeans like only other Europeans or Americans. Now they are great fans of someone who is not from Europe or America. It's wonderful. It's difficult to explain if you are not living here, if you are not a foreigner here.

The popularity of Indian actors like Shahrukh Khan have brought in winds of change and creativity to the continent.

A feeling that immigrants do not just take up jobs, they also add to the culture, to the fermentation of ideas, is now growing.

Orsolya says she feels 'Indian' in her blood and Shahrukh has made her love everything Indian, including Indian dancing and food.

She dances to Indian songs dressed in full Indian costume.

Satish Gandhi: I have a hobby room where the fans meet. I play Shahrukh movies and arrange drinks for them. It's free of cost. I am overwhelmed by the fact that Austrians are watching Indian movies, that they are accepting our culture, wearing our clothes. I feel happy and my heart fills with joy.

In February this year, the Shahrukhis decided to go to Berlin for the premier of 'My Name is Khan'.

Satish Gandhi: We were standing outside the hotel for eight hours - from 3 pm to 11pm. It was minus eight degrees and our hands and feet were swollen. I had accompanied the Austrian fans. I thought they were mad but actually they are really good. Don't ask me how we spent eight and a half hours! We didn't leave because we knew Shahrukh could come out any time. When he came out at 11.30 pm, the first thing he did was to apologise. We appreciated that. He said he was busy doing interviews inside the hotel. He spoke to each one of us, shook our hands and allowed us to take photographs with him. I realised that day that it is not so easy to become a fan. Similarly it is not that simple to become a star. His interest in us was genuine.

Shahrukh Khan: Wherever I go in Europe, sometimes I feel people won't know me and then I go for a function or a conference and suddenly at the airport you  have Germans and Austrian and Polish people who come to meet me, and it's very very touching. I am deeply touched by this and very thankful. I hope they keep liking me like this.

At Vienna University, we meet Prof Elke Mader, Vice Dean of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. The 56-year-old academic has been studying the extensive fan networks in German speaking areas.

Prof Elke Mader: They build a lot of relationships between the movies and the stars and their everyday lives, and they also connect with others.

There is a huge online community which connects people and fans in different places. In German speaking areas the biggest one is called the Bollywood forum. One of the forums is Swiss based and has about six thousand topics and 800 thousand postings on Bollywood. But the majority, the largest section of it is on Shahrukh. We have lots of different threads where people discuss certain topics, which are of course all his movies, there are also general chats on him and about him as a person. Everything that is news or documentary is collected. All his 'tweets' are translated into German. Lots of Bollywood fans who do not speak English rely on others who translate every word, every article on Shahrukh into German.

From September 30 to October 2, sociologists, cultural historians, film experts and other scholars are meeting for an international conference on Shahrukh Khan and Global Bollywood at the Vienna University. Prof Mader, who is the principal organiser, says that Shahrukh Khan is the first ambassador of Bollywood for the new European audiences.

Prof Elke Mader: The conference will focus on Shahrukh in particular as a global player, as somebody who more than others today is extremely significant for a globalised Bollywood. We will be focusing on several topics within this. We will be focusing on Shahrukh and his importance for the South Asian diaspora. There are scholars coming from the US, Canada and from European countries. Most of them are from a South Asian diaspora background.

On the one hand we are examining the global aspects of the people present, the scholars who come, on the topics they talk about. There is a workshop on fan cultures and how people relate in different cultural contexts to Shahrukh and his movies. And there will be a presentation on Russia, new media and fan following, there will be something on Trinidad, a paper on Peru, there will be papers on the German speaking areas, also on Italy.

Another participant is Professor Claus Tieber, who teaches a course in Hindi cinema at Vienna University, and writer of a book, 'Passages to Bollywood'.

Prof Claus Tieber, Department of Theater, Film and Media Studies, Vienna University: About Shahrukh's special appeal - it is not just for Austria, it's for everyone. He combines opposites and he has something for everyone. He is very male in his body but he acts very female in a number of scenes, he is a Muslim playing Hindu, he is clothed in very Western clothes and still comes from India. So he combines all these opposites. That is part of the magic and success of this big star. There is more than just one small image.

Prof Mader found that although there are a few male and queer fans, an overwhelming majority of Shahrukh's fans are women. She says he fulfills the European women's eternal quest for an emotional man who is not shy of saying 'I love you' to the woman he loves.

A fan: I like the romantic and emotional side that Shahrukh Khan displays. The fact that a man can weep and be emotional.

In a continent that prides itself on being rational and logical, Shahrukh's films balances their real life with their imagined life.

Columnist Mehru Jaffer, whose film on Shahrukhis will be shown at the conference, says that she wanted to document the trend before it faded away. She calls it an emotional phenomena.

Mehru Jaffer: There is a lot of gentleness. They love Gauri and they adore his kids as much as they love Shahrukh. On the shelf they will have a huge poster of Shahrukh but there will also be beautiful pictures of Gauri and Shahrukh. It is not just Shahrukh as an actor who is liked but he is liked as a husband, as a friend and as a fan. The very common joke among fans in Vienna is that when you meet Shahrukh and give him your hand to shake, he disregards the hand and gives you a hug instead. They love all this in a culture that is time oriented and people oriented for profit and business.

Some of them live by themselves in a way, with the memory of films and music of Shahrukh. If it gives them so much emotional solace.

I think it is a good reason to love someone in this way.

Shah Rukh lends his 'Robot' to Shankar

It's so sweet. Shah Rukh Khan had parted ways with Shankar the director on a not-very-nice note. The title of Shankar's film, to make things worse, was registered with SRK's company, Red Chillies, which was then meant to produce Robot, the latest Rajnikant-Ash starrer. However when Shankar requested Khan to release the title of the flick to avoid any legal glitches, the superstar had no second thoughts. All bad vibes were dissipated with this kind gesture.

It can be recalled that Shah Rukh Khan and Shankar got together to make Robot, a project which was extremely close to both their hearts. Both of them worked on the script for months before they began squabbling over creative differences. SRK refused to do the film and announced to the world that he was no longer associated with Robot. This was two years ago, just prior to the release of Om Shanti Om. Shankar went ahead and made the film with Rajnikant and Aishwarya Rai. SRK though always wanted to do a superhero film; so he is now making Ra.One. Both the films have similarities. However when Shankar decided that he wants the title Robot for its Hindi version, he wrote a letter to SRK requesting him to part with the title.

When contacted Shankar said, "It is very nice of Shah Rukh to give us the title. It was registered with him company Red Chillies."

Endhiran has a secret connection with Ra.One

Well anything can happen in the Indian film industry Bollywood and the latest to add to this non challenging belief is the small connection between two big movies Ra.One which is a Shahrukh Khan film and the another one is the Robot which is a film starring Aishwarya and Rajinikanth together for the first time.

According to the sources in the beginning the title Robot was owned by Red Chillies which is a Shahrukh khan owned venture and he was chosen to be the part of this film which was been directed by Shanker.

For both the Bollywood biggies, this was a dream project and therefore they were working together extensively to turn it into a beautiful reality on the screen but then due to difference in approach they had to choose different ways and therefore separated. After this initial tiff, the director went ahead with the famous actor from the south Rajnikanth and the king khan started working on his own venture calling it Ra.one.

When Shahrukh Khan moved forward with his project then at that time the director Shankar felt the need to use the same title for which he wrote to Shahrukh Khan and the king khan in all his generosity, agreed for it.

Shah Rukh Khan, Aryan and Suhana More Pics
Shah Rukh Khan posted pictures of himself and his kids, Aryan and Suhana, covered in henna designs from a random home photo shoot he called "sci fi meets twilight meets aliens."

Meanwhile, Gauri has been looking after her ailing dad, RC Chhiba, in Delhi. However, SRK won't be visiting him in the hospital again. Says a source, "He won't come to the hospital. Everything comes to a standstill when people see him.

This disturbs not only the discipline, but also the health of other patients. Khan doesn't wish to disturb anyone, and has decided not to pay a visit to Escorts and repeat what happened at Max Healthcare, Saket." Meanwhile, RC Chhiba's angioplasty has been done (the two stents have been placed) successfully and he's out of the ICU, according to Ranjana Smetacek, official spokesperson for Escorts Heart Institute, New Friends Colony. But that doesn't mean Khan won't come to meet Chhiba at all. "He will come to the city when Chhiba is home," adds the source.
