SRK’s food secrets

London's ES magazine got Shah Rukh Khan to share all his favourite food secrets with them. Did you know he is guilty of drinking 40 cups of black coffee a day? Talk about a caffeine high. Another thing he is addicted to is tandoori chicken. Apparently SRK can eat it 365 days a year. He complained that his cooks sometimes get so bored of only cooking tandoori chicken, that they quit. Now this is hard to believe. How can you get bored of spending quality time in SRK's home?

While he can eat his favourite chicken dish for every meal, the actor reveals that he isn't a fan of seafood and dislikes lobsters. Since he is from North India, he says he is a hard-core meat eater and his earliest memory of food is the yummy raan that his dad would make for them.

If you are an SRK fan and are dying to get a glimpse of him, better take note of his favourite restaurants as you might just catch this foodie enjoying a meal there. He loves China White in Mumbai for the Indian style Chinese they serve, in London it's the Japanese restaurant Nobu, in New York he loves Buddha Bar for its atmosphere, and Kittichai in Soho for its Thai food. And he loves McDonald's too.

Dad's the word for Bobby
After Apne, Bobby Deol will now be seen with his father, Dharmendra, in the comedy, Yamala Pagla Deewana. Talking about their roles in the film, a super excited Bobby who has not seen a release in ages says, "Our characters are like buddies. So, it gave me a chance to behave like a buddy with my father. This is something you miss because when he is your father you have to maintain a certain respect. But when you are playing characters, you get to be what you can't be."

Getting a bit sentimental about his dad, Bobby adds that living in a joint family has proven to be a boon for him. "Because their grandparents are in the same house, I know my kids will learn about morals and culture." And it's not just his grandkids who benefit from Dharam's presence. Bobby says he too still gets inputs from Dharmendra. "I think every parent gives his child inputs. I should know, now I am a father of two myself. My grandfather would fire my dad even when he was a father of four grown up kids. A father will always be a father," he smiles.

Check out: Car crash sequence in SRK's Ra.One

A straight question first. Is there anyone out there who can revoke the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor from driving? Well, if you are Shah Rukh Khan, you can! Well, that's what the King Khan tweeted with this picture.

No prizes for guessing that this is a shot from the heavy duty action scene being shot in London for Ra.One. And from what we make of it, Kareena, is part of this scene in the film. Well, whatever be the case, SRK jokingly said, 'Not allowing Kareena to drive anymore...license revoke national & international'.

Looking at the stills from the movie set of Ra. One, it seems that SRK surely is making the biggest action film seen in Bollywood till date.

Shah Rukh’s new coterie

Shah Rukh Khan is undoubtedly one of the mightiest personalities in the Indian film industry today, no wonder then, that the Khan has his number of foes directly proportional to his number of friends. But seems King Khan is on an agenda to turn his foes into friends now. And why not? After all the friendship spirit is already in the air!

Recently, SRK and Aamir were spotted dining together in London, thereby strengthening their not too string bond. That the two mighty Khans had fallen out badly is not new to anyone. However, things have changed a lot in the past few months.

Also, Shah Rukh has initiated a conversation with Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray, with whom the Khan had a tiff during the release of 'My Name Is Khan'. SRK wished Uddhav happy birthday which was published in Shiv Sena mouthpiece, Saamna.

It clearly seems that SRK doesn't want to carry the baggage of sour relationships with him anymore. Earlier, the Baadshah of Bollywood buried the hatchet with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan. Only time will tell if he adopts the same funda with friend-turned-foe Salman too.

Shahrukh Khan- Home is where the heart is!

Shahrukh Khan- Home is where the heart is!

The King of bollywood, Shahrukh Khan, who is almost on the run 24x 7, has always tried to keep up some time for his family. The busy star has always tried to pack in his busy schedule some significant time slots to devote to his family.

His most precious time spent with his family has been for the public to see when he would inevitably have his wife Gauri and kids Suhana and Aryan right by his side, enjoying the IPL matches of the 'Kolkata Knight Riders' a team of  which he is a co- owner, with full fervor!

Recently, SRK had made a special plan to take his family for a summer holiday, and even managed to catch up with the FIFA World Cup finals with them.

However, all good things do come to end, and now SRK is back to work with a vengeance. Thus, after the relaxed phase, he is on a tight shooting schedule, trying to finish off his shooting schedule of his home production 'RA. ONE', right on time.

His wife and kids have gone back due to the kid's school and all that. But, does SRK miss that entire home sweet home syndrome?

Surpringly, it is a big Yes! Shahrukh Khan, the super star, has admittedly been quoted by tabloids as agreeing to the fact that he is a full on family man. He just loves to spend time with his wife and kids. He also is said to be very thankful to Gauri, for imparting some very great values in his kids.

SRK is well aware that, had it not been for his wife, he would never have made it to the top of the league of stars. This super star is all humble and gracious, he does agree that even for a super star like him – 'Home is where the heart is'!

British PM plays up Shah Rukh connection

As he began his maiden Indian visit Wednesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron singled out Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, food and cricket as among the cultural bonds that tie Indians and Britons.

'We share so much culturally, whether it's watching Shah Rukh Khan, eating the same food or watching cricket,' Cameron said in an article entitled 'A stronger, wider and deeper relationship' in The Hindu, an Indian daily.

Setting a perfect pitch for his two-day India visit, Cameron underlined that he has come to India with the biggest and most diverse delegation to 'renew the relationship between India and Britain, to re-launch a relationship that is stronger, wider and deeper'.

Lauding India's growing economy and emergence on the global stage, Cameron wrote: 'In the U.S., they used to say: 'Go West, young man' to find opportunity and fortune. For today's entrepreneurs, the real promise is in the East.'

'I believe that to spread opportunity for all our people, from Delhi to Dundee, Bangalore to Birmingham, we would benefit from a common strategy for economic growth,' he wrote.

Aamir invites Shah Rukh for the premiere of Peepli Live

Friendship's Day is round the corner and the two Khans of Bollywood - Aamir and Shah Rukh seem to be celebrating it way in advance.

The two actors were recently spotted having dinner together in London.

According to reports, Aamir has invited Shah Rukh Khan for the premiere of his upcoming movie Peepli Live. Whether SRK has accepted the invite still remains a mystery, but the two rivals certainly seem to have become very friendly off late.

In London too, Aamir had invited Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri along with Karan Johar for the private screening of Peepli Live, but SRK couldn't make it since he was busy with the shooting of his movie Ra.One with Kareena Kapoor.

We are hoping that SRK will try and make it for the premiere of the movie.

Shahrukh Khan breaks the ice

Shahrukh Khan once at longer-heads with Shiv Sena has broken the ice by wishing its chief Uddhav Thackeray on his birthday. The story doesn't end there. King Khan's sweet gesture was not just confined to verbal communication. He however, wished 50 year old Sena chief by printing half a page advertisement in Saamana's supplement run by Sena.

It may be noted here, Red Chillies Entertainment under SRK had faced opposition from Sena when he supported Pakistani players during IPL bidding. Super star's My Name Is Khan was attacked at various theatres. And now the same production has churned out 96-page pullout.

Well, on that note, hope things become smooth between King Khan and Shiv Sainiks.

I can't imagine one day without Gauri: Shah Rukh Khan

For actor Shah Rukh Khan, family is his greatest wealth and the constant factor that made him single-mindedly focus on reaching the top. He pours his heart out to DNA on how his family is his secret behind his wellness and determination.

"I think God has been really kind to me. I treasure my family without whom I would not be who  I am today. They have sacrificed for me and they are the reason why I love going back home. For me, success is very important but being successful along with having a great family is necessary. You need to share your success with your family because it is not just for you that you are working," Khan tells DNA.

"I want to see my family happy all the time as when I see them happy, I am at peace. As humans we crave love and it is very important to love and be loved. I'm thankful that I have people who have loved me and supported me through things that might have broken me as a person. It is because of them that I have always found strength," he adds.

For the Deewana of India, wife Gauri Khan is his pillar of strength. "I can't imagine one day without Gauri. I have crazy working schedules through the year and I know how much effort she puts in to look after our home, our kids and even me. I rely on her for everything. She is the reason why we have a good, happy and healthy family. Gauri is a fine mother as I can see her imparting crucial values to my children," Khan  says.

King Khan adds, "I believe parenting is the toughest job in the world as it is parents who shape how their children will grow up to be. A mother's role is very important as she is the closest to the child. When I look at my children, I feel safe that Gauri pays so much attention to them. I'm surprised how she has everything planned and how she knows what we need all the time. When I'm all over the place, I fall back upon Gauri. She touches everything about my life," he ends.

Shahrukh Khan wears a lungi again

Shahrukh Khan recently wore lungi. Yes, you heard it right, King Khan for one of his scenes in Ra. One has worn lungi. This is second time SRK has worn lungi; it was on the sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati 3 when SRK experimented with the attire. But the super star was quite apprehensive about the whole idea of wearing the attire. And why, read on.

"I wore lungi for a scene. It kind of gets windy and cool inside after a while coupled with the fear that it may open. Tense and relaxed coexistence," revealed SRK on the micro-blogging site.

Looks like, SRK is leaving no stones unturned to make a picture perfect out of Ra. One.

"Ra.One is a superhero film. My name is Karan and I am not directing RA.One

SRK's buddy may be directing scenes and songs in the sci-fi flick but insists he isn't at the helm of affairs

Even though over the last few days, Karan Johar has tweeted that he is away on a holiday in London, the truth is, he is there to assist good friend Shah Rukh Khan with the direction of his home production RA.One, currently being shot there. The film is being directed by Anubhav Sinha (of Cash infamy).

Missing Bobby
There have been reports of arguments between King Khan and Sinha since they began filming. But in all fairness, the problem is that the absence of Juhi Chawla's brother (and Red Chillies CEO) Bobby is making all the difference in the smooth sailing of the shoot. Bobby's expertise is being missed at planning and executing, resulting in stress for everyone. In a telling move, Anubhav has been forbidden from using his mobile phone till shots have been okayed on the monitor.

No wastage, please
This is Shah Rukh's most expensive film to date and he didn't want to waste any days, and so he made an SOS call to Karan, whose judgement and cinematic sensibilities he has high regard for. Now some songs and scenes are being shot separately on two different sets.

The unit was divided and they shot at two locations with Khan, Kareena and KJo at one and Anubhav at the other. Karan has directed some action scenes and even shot a song on Bebo and SRK. However, the My Name Is Khan director is very clear that he's just helping out and doesn't want to take the credit away from Anubhav in any way.

Karan Johar was unavailable for comment.

SRK's TWEET TATTLE
"Really sweet to see Karan on an action film shoot. Should blow the cars to kal ho na ho music. kajol in a guest role in the flying cars ha ha. Rains... shooting action & montages together. 2 units... location demands etc. Karan assisting us for a day. hopefully we will make the schedule."

SRK refuses Bigg Boss 4, Channel offered him a larger remuneration than Big B.

Though the fourth season of Bigg Boss is around the corner the host for the show is far from being finalised. After hosting season 3 of Bigg Boss, Amitabh Bachchan will not be able to anchor the show again because the channel does not repeat hosts on this show.

Says a source, "Unfortunately the channel has a weird policy not to repeat hosts on Bigg Boss. Moreover, by the time the channel officials realised that it was difficult to get a replacement it was too late.

Big B had already committed himself to hosting season 4 of Kaun Banega Crorepati. So they consciously decided to look for another host."

The channel then started wooing Shah Rukh Khan since he is viewed as one of the very few people who can fill Big B's shoes.

But despite all their efforts, the channel's deal with King Khan has now fallen through.

Says the source, "The channel went all out to get Shah Rukh to host Bigg Boss 4. They even offered him a larger remuneration than Big B. But SRK could not agree to play host because of lack of time.

The dates for Bigg Boss 4 clashed with Shah Rukh's shooting schedule for Farhan Akhtar's Don 2 with Priyanka Chopra in Bali."

Channel sources confirm that SRK won't do Bigg Boss, as he will be shooting in Bali at that time.

The latest buzz is that the channel is now trying to get Akshay Kumar to play host on Bigg Boss 4. If he doesn't agree, the channel will opt for a non-film celebrity to host the show.

Can't wait to know who this will be...

Shahrukh Khan’s Better Half Gauri Khan To Plunge Into Acting?

For the very first time in so many years, Gauri Khan, the wife of the evergreen Khan of the Bollywood industry, Shahrukh Khan, will be seen on the screen endorsing a product. If the sources are to be believed then the product will be endorsed by the Khan couple.

It is stated that the couple would be endorsing a well known furnishing house and the shoot will take place in Mumbai itself.

A source informed, "Gauri has been approached for commercials earlier but somehow things never worked out. This commercial with Shah Rukh will be her first full-fledged assignment in front of the camera."

Gauri has been maintaining a very low profile since her marriage to Shahrukh. She has done some off camera stuff like designing costumes for hubby for his filmacting. This will be her first dive in this field. Baazigar in 1993, then producing Main Hoon Na in 2004 and Om Shanti Om in 2007 another Shahrukh flicks but has never attempted

Shah Rukh Khan Floored By ‘Inception’

Looks like Christopher Nolan's Inception has found its dedicated fan following in Bollywood as well! After Ram Gopal Varma, it was Shah Rukh Khan's turn to be impressed with the Christopher Nolan sci-fi thriller. He tweeted, "Saw Inception…is this a dream we are all in? Can my dream sharer give us more holidays…or can I just take them & it will be ok."

SRK gets best techies for Ra.One

SRK gets best techies for Ra.One

The shooting of Shah Rukh Khan's Ra.One is progressing in full swing in London. And the Bollywood superstar is taking care not to leave any stone unturned to ensure that the film has a crew that is the best in the business.

A unit source revealed, "Khan, along with Anubhav Sinha, has roped in the creme de la creme of Hollywood technicians. The stunts are to be seen to be believed. Whether it is an action shot or a car chase sequence,
the scenes are impressive."

Besides, Shah Rukh spells clout in London. "It's a well known fact that Shah Rukh owns a home in the UK. In fact on knowing that Khan was to shoot a major schedule there, the UK government has taken care to see that the shooting progresses without a hitch. It has made all the necessary arrangements so that Shah Rukh Khan does not face any hurdles or obstacles. His fans have been cooperative too and they do not disturb the star while the shooting is in progress." Well, now we know why Shah Rukh is called Badshah Khan.

BOLLYWOOD JEEP STUNT DESTROYS LONDON BUS - Ra.One

A JEEP smashes straight through a London bus in an amazing scene in the capital.

But the drama was all a stunt for a flick called R.a.one, the costliest Bollywood movie ever made.

An insider said: "The stunt's expensive but worth it."

Who's taking care of Shahrukh's Ra.One?

Latest buzz doing the rounds is that discontentment among the makers of one of the most expensive films Ra.One over the flow of the script. Thus, Hollywood's screenplay writer David Benullo has been roped to make the script at par with Hollywood standards.

David was introduced to the film soon after SRK and his team felt the need of a Hollywood style to fill the loopholes in the script. In fact, screenplay writer has taken a few rounds in the Mumbai to ink upon the locations to become the backdrop of film.

David will give new dimensions to the script written by trio Shahrukh, director Anubhav Sinha and Mushtaq. Hope, all hard work pays off fruitfully for Ra.One which is releasing later this year.

SRK rides Ducati is his latest sci-fi flick

SRK rides Ducati is his latest sci-fi flick

Shahrukh Khan has always believed in doing things on a lavish scale. His premieres, his performances or anything that is public about him. Obviously, the same goes for his next venture Ra One. Shahrukh, who is also producing the film, is not leaving any stone unturned to make sure this film too is a grand one.

Unit sources shooting in London are raving about how Khan alongwith director Anubhav Sinha is shooting the action scenes for the film with the help of Hollywood technicians.

"The actor is canning car chase sequences and they are truly unbelievable — something that has not been seen in Indian films before. Shahrukh, who had this fascination of riding a Ducati after seeing Tom Cruise's stunt on a hot-red, super-nimble Ducati Hypermotard S in Knight & Day, made sure he would ride one in the film too," a source added.

And that's not all. The amiable Khan is said to have the full support of the UK government to shoot the scenes without any hitch.

RA.ONE: Benullo looking after the superhero part of the script!

There is a lot of confusion about the contribution and role of David Benullo, a Hollywood screenwriter, in Shah Rulh Khan's under-production Anubhav Sinha directed RA.ONE.

There were rumours that not satisfied with the original script (by SRK himself, Anubhav and Mushtaq) Shah Rukh Khan had handed over the entire work to David, to get that Hollywoodish touch to the superhero flick.

However, that is not the case. What is true is that David Benullo did visit the various sites (in Mumbai) which would be part of the backdrop of RA.ONE to visualize it. Actually, Benullo is writing the superhero part of the collaborative script by SRK, Sinha and Sheikh and they are working as a team.

The much awaited RA.ONE is expected to release sometimes during the first quarter of 2011.

The Bollywood romcom still showing after 15 years

Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl: a classic recipe for box office bullion

After a summer of under-performing blockbusters, Hollywood bosses might do well to look at the incredible success of India's longest-running film, still packing in cinema-goers after 15 years.

Released in 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The big hearted will take the bride) has become one of the most popular films of all time.

Having broken all records in terms of number of showings and box office takings, it is now in its 769th week at one of the main cinemas in Mumbai (Bombay), the beating heart of Bollywood.

And the film continues to play to a nearly full house over weekends at the 1,000-plus-seat Maratha Mandir cinema in the south of the city.

Spectators stream in in steady numbers for the matinee show of DDLJ - as it is popularly known - at the 52-year-old cinema.

Cinemagoers watch "DDLJ" in Mumbai on 11 July 2010 The film catapulted Shahrukh Khan to Bollywood megastardom

The best seats cost just 20 rupees (42 US cents; 27 UK pence).

Manoj Desai, executive director of the cinema, says the movie has been a record-breaking success for multiple reasons.

"The film is perfect with lovely music and the best Bollywood pair," he says.

"Also, this theatre is in a strategic location where we get 40% viewing from people who are travelling into or out of Mumbai.

"This place is for masses, so the rates have been maintained for years. Most importantly the film is important because of its message of love with parents' permission."

For sheer box office staying power, the movie has even leap-frogged classics such as The Sound of Music and The Guns of Navarone, Mr Desai said.

'Magical'

It is a love story, where boy meets girl (both Indians living in London) on a trip to Europe.

But girl's marriage is already fixed to her father's friend's son in Punjab in India.

What follows is an entertaining drama careering between London and Punjab, and in the end, of course, the lovers get together - with the families' blessing.

The lead pair, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, became stars overnight.

The film catapulted Shahrukh Khan, now also known as King Khan, to the top league of stars and he was typecast as a "romantic hero" for years.

Cinema officials say nearly all seats are taken at weekends and the film sometimes does better than new releases.

The film is now run on a no-profit, no-loss basis for the theatre as well as for Yash Raj Films, producer of DDLJ.

Jagjivan Maru, the cinema's chief projectionist, who has been showing this movie since its release, says it is magical.

"I have seen this movie every day for the last 14 years. That is a record in itself. It is our job to show the film. However, I never get bored of DDLJ.

"It's like I am in a loving relationship with the film. I still love the last scene when Amrish Puri [who plays father of the actress] slaps Shahrukh Khan."

A story well told

Rishi, who had come to see the film, said: "I had seen this film earlier four to five times many years back. I also see it on TV once in while.

"I dropped in with my friends. Maybe I still like the film because I first saw it in my college days and it really worked then. Most of my friends saw the film many times - for the love story, songs and the actors."

Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst says: "It is not about the records this film has set. Records will follow if there is content.

"This film has got everything right: music, actors, direction. The movie is still making decent collections despite it being shown on TV very often. It is a story well told."

The cinema officials plan to keep the film running as long as they can and have planned a big celebration in October 2010 to mark the full 15 years since its release.

Among other popular features of the movie is its catchphrase "Come, fall in love" - and the audience at Maratha Mandir seemed to have done just that with DDLJ.

SRK to host Bigg Boss 4?

After Big B hosted the last season of Bigg Boss, SRK seems to be the next logical choice to step into his big shoes. Rumours mills suggest that Shah Rukh Khan will soon be roped in as the host of Bigg Boss 4. If reports are to be believed, Colors has completed all the formalities, and is waiting for SRK's final nod. The channel, however, is not ready to spill the beans before everything is finalised.

Sara Khan of Bidaai fame is reportedly finalised as a contestant on the show.

Well with SRK following the footsteps of Big B everywhere, we are not really surprised!

SRK lives life king-size!

Talk about being treated as royalty, this King commands it wherever he goes.

Last week, Shah Rukh Khan was in South Africa for the FIFA finals, and all that exuberance, hollering and cheering was quite a high for this sports buff, but it sapped his energy. He ended up with flu and bad throat, of course, the fact that the game was really over only paled his high spirits.

So, the hotel he was staying in left no stone unturned to pamper the superstar. When they heard that SRK wasn't feeling too well, they served him a special ginger lemon drink every few hours.

Their best chefs were put to work to dish out simple Indian fare like daal, chawal and sabzi to appease his taste buds. Such are the privileges of being the King Khan, huh? Live life king size, SRK! That's the way to be.

SRK following Tom Cruise?

Bollywood actors getting inspired from Hollywood is not a new phenomenon– from costumes to  characters, there have been several instances of 'similarities'.

Seems even the 'Badshaah of Bollywood' could not resist the temptation this time. SRK's famous tweet about him riding a Ducati is his forthcoming Ra.One came in at a time when Tom Cruise's stunt on a hot-red, super-nimble Ducati Hypermotard S in 'Knight & Day' is generating much hype in Hollywood.

Well, given SRK's fascination with the No1 tag in Bollywood, it is no wonder, that the superstar chooses to be inspired from the No1 in Hollywood!

Actor, producer, television host and IPL franchise owner -- King Khan has his fingers in all kinds of pies. And now the mega star seems to have hit upon another big idea. He posted a photo on Twitter the caption of which wittily reads: "forming a band...want to call it The Arks. i cant sing so will be the manager..ha ha." Relax, he is not "forming a band". It was a joke! As he tweeted some minutes later:

"am joking

SRK

But you never know with this Khan what he might bring out of the hat next.

Another good profession that we can suggest to this superstar is to try his hand at stand up comedy!

We love you Bollywood, says Deutschland

Thousands of Germans queued up for hours in sub-zero temperatures to watch My Name is Khan at the recently held Berlinale, the Berlin International Film Festival and broke into thunderous applause inside the theatre as soon as they saw, 'Dharma Production' on screen!

A sight which caught festival delegate Dorothee Wenner by surprise. "I have never seen a German audience express themselves like that over the name of a production company!"

When Germans, known for their reserve, go berserk inside a movie theatre for a Bollywood film, it is time to sit up and take notice. Wenner, in fact, finds many German movie buffs, reacting in a whole new way, 'a typical Indian way' as a result of a Bollywood craze that has taken the German cinemaspace by storm over the past six years.

Today, Hindi films are all over Germany, from theatres to TV which are giving them primetime slots, to a flood of home videos which are readily available in the market.

The star or the centre of all focus is of course none other than SRK. When My Name is Khan (MNIK) was screened at the Berlinale in February, thousands of enthusiasts from all over Germany, converged at Berlin, throwing traffic out of gear. The more than 3,000 tickets for all screenings of MNIK, were sold within minutes. In fact, tickets were reportedly auctioned on e-Bay for e1,000 (around Rs 60,000) each.

"Bollywood is no more a niche choice, it is becoming mainstream and MNIK marks the beginning of the conquest of world popular cinema by Bollywood." says Hanns-Goerg Rodek, the film editor at Die Welt, a German daily.

Shah Rukh Khan remains the biggest craze, though Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, too, have their following. "I like Aamir more," says Antje Glück, a research scholar at Freie Universität, Berlin. Cricket-lover Antje has watched Aamir's Lagaan (thrice), Rang de Basanti and The Rising with friends in Germany. But it was after watching Main Hoon Naa that she decided to learn Hindi.

"I want to watch the Bollywood movies in the original. Dubbed SRK is really funny!" says the 30-year-old. The leading lady for the moment is Kajol with MNIK, but Rani Mukherjee and Aishwarya Rai are also much loved with their films like Chalte Chalte and Dil Ka Rishta.

Although still hooked on to Hollywood, German audiences are getting more aware of Indian cinema and want more. Berlin-based Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art has lined up a series of Indian films to be screened at an ongoing event, 'Moving Politics: Cinemas from India' (June 27-Sept 29, 2010).

"This is an effort to bring all kinds of Indian cinema, including regional and modern, to the German audience," says Wenner, who is also a film curator. Cashing in on all things filmi, is Naseem Khan, publisher of Ishq, a Bollywood lifestyle magazine which the 31-year-old NRI launched four years ago and which sells 30,000 copies not just in Germany, but also in Austria, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium, as well as online.

"The unique thing is that the local, German-speaking people have caught the Bollywood fever and its not just films, it's the Indian lifestyle as reflected in Bollywood, including food, clothes and travel, " says Khan.

Bollywood theme parties and special events — like the 'Ladies Night' special screening of MNIK at a Cinemax theatre a day before its release — are common. "Even learning Hindi and Bollywood dance moves is a craze," adds Wenner. While the cinema of Ray to Raj Kapoor was known, it was not until entertainment channel, RTL II, started telecasting Hindi films dubbed in German in primetime slots that Bollywood became a mass phenomenon.

The overwhelming response to Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, the first film to be screened in 2004 set off a trend which just caught on big time. "We picked films sensing the factors responsible for that success: a love story, a colourful and feel-good-decor, opulent dance scenes and SRK," says Ronja Witt, spokesperson for RTL II.

The channel's programming is a mix of a lot of SRK films along with others like Roshan and Rai, saw it capture a sensational market share, especially with the female audience and what was dismissed as kitschy two decades ago became very 'in', says critic Rodek.

"There is a naiveté which is missing in Hollywood films which are still calculative, whereas these films are still very naïve in their emotions, besides being exotic," adds Rodex who also attributes the experimentation, time edits and entry of the Hollywood studios and their distributor strength too growing the phenomena.

"MNIK was 165 minutes in Berlinale and in cinemas it is 130 minutes long. They are cutting out the portions in a manner that the films retain the distinct their 'Bollywoodness' yet adapt to Western tastes. Kites, released in both in the short and long versions across global markets is another example of how Bollywood is trying to woo different kind of audiences," ends Rodek.

SRK goes on a safari

After Germany lost to Spain in the World Cup semi final, Shah Rukh Khan and his son Aryan were so depressed that nothing but an animal safari could lift their spirits. So they went to one of those exotic fancy ranches in South Africa where the rich and famous stay. It was a night safari, so King Khan and his doting son stayed up all night. Unfortunately though they didn't spot too many wild animals. They were especially very eager to see some lions. Did the king of the jungle keep away as he was intimidated by the King of Bollywood?
