Shah Rukh Khan is a man who dons many hats; co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, brand ambassador of everything from economy cars to luxury watches, and also acts from time to time - mostly in big budget films for his favorite production house, Yash Raj Films.
However, when he's watching his Knights play in the stadium, the only way he can listen to Yash Raj songs are on an iPod as DJs at various IPL venues have been given a straight-forward directive - play any Bollywood song but those from Yash Raj films.
"We have a fixed play list. We can play club tracks, pop, Bollywood and even Kannada movie songs, but can't play any songs from Yash Raj Films movies," resident DJ at the M Chinnaswamy stadium, Lloyd Byford, told HT.
The reasoning behind such a move, he says, is that songs from the banner, which specialises in tearjerkers, don't fit the mood of a T20 match.
On most match days, the DJ has to be behind his turntable well before the match gets underway. In fact I like the pre-match period, more than the match itself because we can play songs in full. When the game is on, the songs only have a 30-second slot," said Byford. Byford's crew consists of two Emcees and an audio-visual expert. "It's pretty complicated because we also have to be constantly in sync with the broadcasters, and action on the field," he added.
On the songs that get the fans in the spirit, he said: "Whenever the IPL trumpet sound is played, you get huge cheers. But the biggest cheers are for the Kannada songs."
