Shahrukh Khan's debut was in typical B'wood fashion: in 'Deewana', he played the ever-singing, ever-dancing lover boy with wavy hair... What made Shahrukh's portrayal of this clichéd character different was the verve and energy with which he played it. SRK has managed to retain the same energy level throughout his 19-year career. His detractors have often accused him of hamming but SRK is an adamant advocate of whatever he does, and has been proved right by the enormous initial pull his name purports at both Indian and overseas Box office. In 'Devdas', Shahrukh did a character that was immortalised earlier by none other than Dilip Kumar. Shahrukh perfectly complemented Sanjay Leela Bhansali's colourful palette and melodrama concentrate with his intense depiction of the lead character. The typical SRK strategy of overindulging in himself paid good dividends here: For once, the narcissism of the actor mixed well with the self loathing of the character. And people instantly forgot the Dilip Kumar portrayal and cozied up to the new one.
SRK's other notable performances of the decade were in 'Chak De India' (Kabeer Khan) and 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' (Surinder Sahni/Raj Kapoor).
